Abstract
In this study the mechanism of pressor action of oxytocin in the tortoise was investigated. In the whole animals oxytocin elicited hypertensive response, either inn reserpine-treated. animals or Regitine-pretreated animals, indicating that the action is not mediated by sympathoadrenal system.
Further evidence supporting the above observation was obtained in in vitro experiments with isolated atria of tortoise. Inthis preparation oxytocin depressed contractility, while norepinephrine and isoproterenol stimulated. It was thus concluded that oxytocin elevates blood pressure in the tortoise by directly constricting. peripheral blood vessels not by increasing cardiac output.
